EUGEEN VAN MIEGHEM

1875

Born in café ‘In het Hert’ in the old harbour of Antwerp.

1892-1896

Studies at the Academy of Antwerp and encounters work by Van Gogh, Seurat and Toulouse-Lautrec at the exhibition L’Association pour l’Art.

1897

Encounters work by Munch at the salon of La Libre Esthétique, in Brussels.

1899

Visitor of the anarchistic literary centre De Kapel. Works as a charterer in the harbour. Becomes acquainted with Augustine Pautre. First drawing of migrants.

1901

Takes part in the Brussel’s salon La Libre Esthétique next to Renoir, Monet, Cézanne and Vuillard, among others.

1902

Marriage to Augustine Pautre and birth of their son.

1905

Draws his dying wife. Takes part in the first salon of Kunst van Heden (contemporary art) with James Ensor and Jakob Smits, among others.

1912

First solo exhibition in the Antwerpse Koninklijk Kunstverbond (Antwerp Royal Art Union).

1920

Appointed as teacher at the Antwerp Academy.

1930

Dies in Antwerp from an aneurysm.
