Pupil of his father Abraham Toornvliet, a painter of glass.
Travels to Rome and studies, Raphael in particular.
Becomes a member of the Bent group in Rome.
Stays in Venice and enhances his skills further as a painter.

Returns to Leiden. Becomes a member of the Leidse Gilde van Schilders (Leiden’s Guilde of Painters).
1703
Becomes dean of the Guild.
Remains painter of mainly genre pieces and portraits of individuals and groups.
1719
Dies in Leiden.
