From the Middle Ages onwards, this has taken shape in the motif of the Danse Macabre, in which Death enters the world of the living and confronts them with one universal truth: everything is transient, and no one escapes the end. With this exhibition, Museum De Reede explores how artists throughout history have engaged with this theme. From historical prints to contemporary interpretations: time and again, they seek out images that reveal how life and death are intertwined. ![Paul Weber](https://museum-dereede.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Paul%20Weber.jpg?width=1307&height=1837&name=Paul%20Weber.jpg)   The portrait \*Im guten Glauben\* (\*In Good Faith\*) depicts a donkey standing upright on its hind legs. Dressed in a white coat and holding a large syringe in its front hooves, it stands on three large books and, through its spectacles, appears to be gazing past the viewer into the distance. Around him, small skeletons have gathered to form a circle and, through their flowing movements, point towards a dance of death. The very dark background draws the viewer’s gaze straight to the brightly lit donkey, whilst the skeletons form a dance of death.     ![](https://26506781.fs1.hubspotusercontent-eu1.net/hub/26506781/hubfs/Schermafbeelding%202026-07-18%20162716.png?width=1200&length=1200&name=Schermafbeelding%202026-07-18%20162716.png) Klaus Rosanowski | Der letzte Walzer (1974) ![](https://26506781.fs1.hubspotusercontent-eu1.net/hub/26506781/hubfs/Schermafbeelding%202026-07-18%20162849.png?width=1200&length=1200&name=Schermafbeelding%202026-07-18%20162849.png) Salvador Dali | Femme, cheval et la mort (1967) ![Schermafbeelding 2026-07-18 163034](https://26506781.fs1.hubspotusercontent-eu1.net/hub/26506781/hubfs/Schermafbeelding%202026-07-18%20163034.png?width=1200&length=1200&name=Schermafbeelding%202026-07-18%20163034.png) Alfred Rethel | tod als Freund (1851) ![Schermafbeelding 2026-07-18 163123](https://26506781.fs1.hubspotusercontent-eu1.net/hub/26506781/hubfs/Schermafbeelding%202026-07-18%20163123.png?width=1200&length=1200&name=Schermafbeelding%202026-07-18%20163123.png) Gertrud Degenhardt | Soldat,Soldat (1967) # DANSE MACABRE 30 October 2026 - 11 January 2027 [![logo](https://22094903.fs1.hubspotusercontent-na1.net/hubfs/22094903/logo-compleet-white.svg "Terug naar home")](https://museum-dereede.com/) Navigation [Museum](https://museum-dereede.com/en/museum) [Collection](https://museum-dereede.com/en/collection) [Expo](https://museum-dereede.com/en/news/tag/expo) [News](https://museum-dereede.com/en/news/tag/news) [Contact](https://museum-dereede.com/en/contact) Openingstijden Monday: 11am – 5pm Tuesday: Closed Wednesday: Closed Thursday: 11am - 5pm Friday: 11am – 5pm Saturday: 11am – 5pm Sunday: 11am – 5am Contact details [+32(3)434 03 04](tel:+32(3)434%2003%2004) [info@museum-dereede.be](mailto:info@museum-dereede.be) [Ernest van Dijckkaai 7B-2000, Antwerpen](https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Current+Location/Ernest+van+Dijckkaai+7,+2000+Antwerpen,+Belgi%C3%AB) ![logo](https://22094903.fs1.hubspotusercontent-na1.net/hubfs/22094903/logo-compleet-white.svg "Terug naar home") Copyright © 2026 Museum de Reede
