Käthe Kollwitz (1867-1945), the most important German female artist from the first half of the twentieth century, knew as no other how to encapsulate subjects such as war, poverty and death, yet she was no less adept at portraying love, security and the fight for freedom. In Flanders she is best known for the touching pair of sculptures ‘The Grieving Parents’ at the German military cemetery in Vladslo. Museum De Reede brings together a retrospective of her captivating and expressive graphic work with pieces loaned from the Käthe Kollwitz Museum’s collection in Cologne.
